Bedroom redecoration, vol 1 of 999,999,999,999,999,999,999 (ok, not that long) [24 Jun 2009|02:21pm]

You'll notice there's no pic of the bookshelves or storage/comfy bench as I haven't gotten/installed 'em yet. This weekend (crosses fingers).

Why did no one tell me black sheets were so awesome. I've only ever had white/pink/flowery sheets that my mom likes, so getting some black ones, just... mmmm. They're amazing. Making the bed, I have to look really close just to see where they line up, but they feel so...well, grown up! And at 300 tpi (instead of my usual 200 tpi) I'm loving the softness factor as well.

Oh, one last nice feature, you can't see the cat hair. Lucky believes my bed is his own all day long. He kicks me out in the morning and I kick him out at night. Now, though, you can't see his fur. Just my occasional blond hair. Heck, can you even see him? He's got his eyes open and his ears peek up just a little on the white body pillow, but otherwise, the guy blends in awfully nice.

mishacollins and bedroom update [18 Jun 2009|01:57pm]
[ mood | lazy ]

Even if you don't Twitter, go here and read the back Twits of mishacollins, Castiel on Supernatural for the unfamiliar.

The guy is hilarious!

As for an update on the bedroom project, well it's going slow. Ok, a snail would be hardly visible it'd be going so fast in comparison. Why? Well, I'm a lazy sod. Oh, and I'm sickly (in a barely there cold kinda way) and I'm overworked (year end close is June 30 and I'm struggling to get everything done on time).

But really, when I roll in at about 7:30/8 p.m. after my daily overtime, I'd really rather just settle on the chaise and watch Renovation Realities on HGTV than do my own bit of minor DIY. Maybe this weekend I'll work up some energy, but then again, maybe not.

My next home improvement project is to build a shelving system in my bedroom nook. That nook is basically the size of a standard closet, but it’s higher than it looks because of the heating duct running along the ceiling. I’m gonna put up black shelves along the length of the back wall and the left side wall (going around the corner). Then, I’m gonna put a comfy black storage bench in the empty space left in front of the shelves on the back wall and against the right wall. It’ll all fit in just perfect. Then I’ll get some white/black (maybe even red) accent pillows for the bench and the bed to get it all to go together. Oh, and I’m putting a nice warm light track above the whole thing, hidden behind the heater duct.

I’m doing it this less than permanent way ‘cause I want to be able to stage the nook as a closet if/when I sell, but as a single gal, the one walk-in closet is fine for lil ol’ me, and I want a book nook.

I’ll put up pics of it when I’m done.

I had to put up the B&W pic in order to order a high quality print, so I thought I’d just drop a note as well.

Yes, I’m very into home improvement right now, still coming off the high of assembling pre-made shelving for the office closet with my new drill.

Why no, I’ve never really used power tools before getting my condo. Why do you ask?

[04 Apr 2009|05:27pm]
[ mood | content ]

What the heck was that last entry about? Well, it looks like LJ's changed a lot since I last stopped by, and I had to try that new fangled writer's blocky thing. ;-)

Guess what, guess what?

I've got a laptop!!! *Does the new laptop dance*

(That's laptop dance, not lap dance. Get your minds out of the gutter.)

What does a new laptop mean? Well, for me, it means a first laptop, period. I've had the same Totally Awesome desktop for about a decade, and for most of that time, it hasn't had internet.

I'm sitting in the library hooked to their wi-fi, so no one waiting to kick me off, no timing warnings kicking me off after 30 minutes, no having to bring a memory stick to save anything, and I can actually set and keep favorites on my internet window.

Oh, and I got a whole cute bright red laptop case (which goes with my bright red luggage, but I didn't spend that much!) and kitty sticker (which goes with my black Lucky cat, same on the spending, though... huh) to go with it, just to differentiate it from the work laptop I take home sometimes. It could get confusing 'cause I bought this laptop from work. (That's my story and I'm sticking to it. Overenthusiastic spending? Who me? Nah.)

They have a thing where when they trade out the old (2006) laptops for the new (when they hire a bunch o' new people), they sell off the old still functioning laptops for $200. Kewl, huh? It's a Compaq NC6230, so it doesn't have a DVD burner, but I bought an awesome external one (and a freaking huge external hard drive, well, close to huge, I got the 750Gb one, and dude, these are much more expensive at the company site!) so I'm finally going to empty my camera's memory cards and go through the pics and send 'em off to the peeps on the tour. Can you believe I totally filled my desktop with Oz/NZ pictures and still had hundreds left over? Well, of course you can. Freakin' old computer.

Dude!!! I just realized how freaking long it's been. (And how freaking much I'm saying "Dude" and "Freaking". I've been watching WAAAAYYYYY too much Supernatural, but how kewl was that last ep?!?!??!) How is my journal still up? DD, you are a goddess for just letting me keep my emoticons that long.

Well, if you're wondering, the mental health status is green across the board. I am feeling dang good about myself, imperfections, weight, and all, and have decided to start to date. Yes, date. And, yes, I do realize that that requires meeting persons of the same species, opposite sex, who are not otherwise engaged (pun intended).

How am I going about this? Very slowly. Like my goals (I do goals with my gal...I call her my gal 'cause saying my LCSW or therapist or loony bin person tends to stop conversations and start people snatching away any sharp objects). Where was I? Yes, my goals. For my first three week assignment, I spent my time thinking about and getting comfortable with the subject, bringing up the subject with friends and family. Testing the waters a toe at a time sort of thing.

Then, I actually attended a singles event with my church. There were even actual live guys there. I did show up late (having to fret and pace and get a couple of outfits on and off and on again before I finally just had to man up [in a feminine way] and go) but I had a fabulous time. Well, a relaxed, good time. Well, it wasn't a horrible, life-scarring experience. This is my church (LDS), remember, so it was pretty tame. Well, extremely tame. We played Pictionary. There were other groups in the cultural hall (translation: carpeted basketball court off the chapel...yes, I know it's weird) and some of them went so far as to play *horrified gasp* Taboo!!! Still, I really had a good time. My kinda people, you know? Kinda socially awkward, but willing to get out and try kinda people. Oh, and a few seemingly young guys that are so out of my league that I could actually be comfortable around 'em. I know. I'm a bit twisted.

Anyway, good things.

Oh, and I got a mega super kewl camera for myself for Christmas (for free, 'cause I got a huge gift certificate from the store for buying all my new condo furniture there and had to spend it by year end). It's a Canon SX10, and I just started a community education digital photography course as an excuse to learn all the kewl bits and bobs on it (just look at that optical zoom!...my biggest prob on my last trip), and of course, to get out there. Meet people. You know. Anyway, I'll be taking pics in the upcoming weeks. We're apparently have a flickr site, too, though I don't have the address right now. Maybe I'll point you too it (if they don't turn out too embarassingly bad).

Well, that was a glut of info! Guess I should let you absorb that before I write some more. Hope everyone's well. Much huggles all around.

[ETA: OMHeck! That just about stopped my heart. I clicked preview and the dang IE closed down. I so <3 this new LJ draft-saving feature. Talk about a lifesaver! I couldn't remember what I just rambled about to save my life, or at least to save my journal entry.]

March of Dimes Walk America [27 Apr 2007|01:31pm]
[ mood | energetic ]

Whoa!!! Two posts in as many days?!?! You're gonna start getting sick of me. ;-)

I know this is *extremely* last minute, but my friend Lisa here is participating in the March of Dimes Walk America tomorrow, and I thought, "Why not me, too?"

The March of Dimes' mission to save babies and the money we raise helps save premature and sick babies.

I'm walking for the first time this year for my nephew, Caleb. In 2000, he was born 3 1/2 months premature. He was about 1 lb, 12 oz and 12" long. Today, he is a happy six year old, but he is far from healthy. His early birth lead to severe cerebral palsy, breathing problems, eating problems, and profound deafness. Still, he is the joy of our family. He always has a huge smile for me whenever I see him, and laughs all the time.

Premature birth is the #1 cause of newborn death and the biggest threat to babies’ health today, and through WalkAmerica, the March of Dimes is funding important research to find out why premature birth happens and what can be done to prevent it.

So, we're done with the pitch, let's pass the hat...Contributing to my walk online is fast, easy and secure. You can donate directly from my personal webpage with a credit/debit card or PayPal. If you prefer, I can also accept cash or check. Just click the appropriate box on my webpage.

I appreciate any help you can give me. Have a wonderful day! :-D

Testing the limits of LJ... [25 Apr 2007|12:19pm]
[ mood | excited ]

Hello, all! "Very long time, no... uh... write," as my friend "Steve" would say. ;-) I wonder how big of an entry LJ will let me make.

Let's see now, what have I been doing since...November 1, 2006?!?!?! Yeah, I guess it has been a long time. I've actually done quite a few things. Let's break it down, shall we?

Much rambling within... )

Ok, so in summary. I'm good.

LT, I loved your letter. I'll respond in detail and mail you later on. In fact, I think I'll bring it with me on my trip and send it out with the lil bit o' Italy I'm gonna send ya. Ok?

To everyone else who's still interested. I'm well... how're you?

Another fun meme brought to you by rfreebern.

Actually, I did go as an Observer to a Halloween party Saturday night. It was with a group of friends who are Sci-Fi fans. It was a Sci-Fi/Fantasy murder mystery party. I played a character called The Inquisitor. My first thought was the Red Dwarf Inquisitor, but the costume was too complex. The great thing about MST3k is that the costumes are cheap and easy to make. I even got myself a brain at the local Halloween shop.

I stayed at the party a bit too late (3 am taking Daylight Savings into account), but I had a great time. After the murder mystery party (which I solved!), we watched bad/funny Halloween movies. The first was Idle Hands. Intentionally funny with quite a dumb premise. The second one was Silent Hill. It was obvious some money had been put into it, but the violence was so random and the plot practically nonexistent, that we ended up just mocking it. Tons of fun.

Yesterday, my nieces and nephews came to visit my work and trick-or-treat the cubicles. They got quite a haul. I was surprised by how much candy people brought. My younger nieces filled their sacks here and didn't even have to go trick or treating the neighborhood later. It was fun to have 'em meet my friends at work and my friends to meet all the kidlets. My older brother's family surprised me, as I wasn't expecting them to show up, and I was just thrilled when I saw them walk in. Much hugs and hanging from Auntie ensued. :-D

I hope you all had a happy halloween as well, and thanks for the virtual treats. You are all too generous. Well, except for the tricks. Eww, used Kleenex!

Eureka, I have found it... [09 Oct 2006|07:23pm]
[ mood | excited ]
[ music | ringing phones ]

...my next fandom obsession.

I officially love Eureka. Thanks to my parents Tivo'ing it for me and bringing up the tapes on a visit, I have watched almost all the episodes in a weekend marathon, and I am hooked.

Just a thought, though. Why is it that my favorite punching bags (aside from poor Logan) seem to have the same basic name? John Carter (ER), John Cricton (Farscape) and now Jack Carter (Eureka). I guess my next show will be a prequel of Farscape staring Jack Crichton, huh?

Oh, and is anyone taking bets on how quickly Sci-Fi will cancel this show out from underneath me? Nah, that's a sure thing, isn't it? No bookie'll take the risk. :-P

Random Hugh Sighting... [11 Jul 2006|01:31pm]
[ mood | mischievous ]

Usually when I'm driving a known route (like to work or home), I don't tend to notice the surrounding stores/buildings/street signs/etc. Yes, I have on more than one occasion had to be told where a certain restaurant/store wasonly to discover I've been driving past it for years. Also, I have snapped out of reveries only to find myself halfway home when I'd intended to drive somewhere else entirely.

I say this because I want you to realize how unusual it was for me to notice the sign. The green neon sign tacked to a phone pole. The green neon sign which says, and I quote, "HUGH YARD SALE..." and then goes on to give an address. When I first saw it, I figured I'd probably read it wrong and it actually said "HUGE YARD SALE..." Well, today I looked at it again, and sure enough it says, "HUGH".

Hmmm...do you think I should check it out, or do you suppose all the good Hughs are already sold? My luck, they'll just have a Hefner or what's left of a Downs at the bottom of the barrel.

Bold all of the following TV shows which you've ever seen 3 or more episodes of in your lifetime.
Italicize a show if you're positive you've seen every episode of it.
If you want, add up to 3 additional shows (keep the list in alphabetical order).

I've seen it! [27 May 2006|05:29pm]
[ mood | anxious ]

Ok, the library closes in 30 minutes. They shut down the computers in 25, but I had to come straight from the theater after finally seeing X3. I've been avoiding spoilers religiously as I felt that ruined my X2 experience, so I haven't read the theories on what the movie would be before it came out, and I haven't read anyone else's reviews. This is just me, squeeing and ranting away. Feel free to skip.

I've got news! [05 May 2006|09:34am]
[ mood | excited ]

Well, [info]lady_t_220, you can uncross everything... I GOT THE JOB!!!

*does the happy Hughie bootie dance*

Yep, I'm an accountant again. General ledger, fund accounting, non-profit private college, financial aid reporting, internal auditing, ... It's gonna be so much fun! That, and they're implementing a new computer system for their accounting process. I love learning new programs, and now I'm gonna be able to pick up a new one.

Great people, great benefits (that kick in right away), great great salary (amounts to a fifty...count that 5-0...fifty percent raise over my current wage), more vacation, amazing retirement compensation (12% employer contribution without requiring an employee match)...

I'm sooooooo happy!

My younger brother, who lives upstairs in the duplex, has also been hired this week in a federal job. I think it'll be something he likes, and he has a good chance of doing well. There's talk of getting cable and wiring the downstairs. My dad (the duplex owner) has already mentioned the possibility of internet access if I had a higher salary and would be interested in getting it. Wowzers!

What else have I been up to? Well, I'm planning a baby shower for a friend of mine at work. And to me, babies mean new knitting patterns to try out. I don't have pics of my work, but they basically look like the pics on the patterns. Check 'em out!

I've got 'em all done, and I'm contemplating one more baby cap (with kitten ears) since my friend has four cats as well as a kidlet on the way...yes, they were trying for a while to get pregnant. I'm kinda glad for the cats as Lucky won't leave me alone while I'm knitting, and I'm bound to miss at least a bit of fur when cleaning the finished products before wrapping. ; -)

White, knit dress (the shorter option, not the christening one)
White booties
Lace Baby Bonnet (I increased the pattern as following it exactly results in a bonnet fit for a doll, not a newborn.)
I took a couple of patterns and combined them for baby mittens (with a heart seed stitch on the back of each hand.
And, the piece de resistance... Mr. Bean's Teddy Bear

Mystery solved! [27 Jan 2006|09:01am]
[ mood | silly ]

LOL!!!

Ok, about thirty minutes after work, suddenly it comes to me. Yep, I'd been trying to figure it out all day, but finally when I've got a break it pops into my head, "Hey, I wonder if that was from Les Miserables."

It had the same sort of feel to it, but I'd twisted the tune so much throughout the day trying to figure it out, that I couldn't be sure. Turns out I was right, and horribly wrong. I'd mangled the lyrics something awful, so there was no possible way anyone could figure out what the heck I was thinking but me. Sorry to bother you about it.

My lyrics:
"...as long as you've got luck to scratch..."

The real lyrics, in context of the song introducing the Gavroche character:
'Ow do you do? My name's Gavroche.
These are my people. Here's my patch.
Not much to look at, nothing posh
Nothing that you'd call up to scratch.
This is my school, my high society
Here in the slums of Saint Michele
We live on crumbs of humble piety
Tough on the teeth, but what the hell!
Think you're poor?
Think you're free?
Follow me! Follow me!

Well, I knew "scratch" was in there somewhere. ;-P

Oh, and I know. Who do I think I am, being incommunicado for so long, then popping on with some random bit of nonsense. Still, when it comes to random bits of nonsense, who comes first to mind but... Um, I think I'll stop right there. ;-)

Loverly to see y'all again, even if it is for a quickie on my break. I've missed me, too. No wait, I've missed you all, too. There, that sounds better.

Psst... The less said the better at the moment, but be aware that plans are going into effect to get me more moula for my favorite hobbies: watching cable and movies and then gossiping with friends online. ;-)

Trivia time [26 Jan 2006|11:31am]
[ mood | confused ]

Sorry to question and run, but it's a short lunch break.

I've got a bit of a song stuck in my head, but I can't remember the whole song, I can't even remember a whole line from the song. I've just got this piece of a sentence from somewhere in the middle. It could be an old song, a Broadway tune, a commercial jingle, a TV show (cancelled or new from the US or abroad), or it might be something completely different. I just can't get it out of my head and I've tried and tried, but I can't remember any more of it. Do y'all have any ideas?

The line is:
"...as long as you've got luck to scratch..."

And yes, I might even have the words wrong on that bit, but that is close to what it sounds like. Is that difficult enough for ya?

So, any ideas? Anyone? Anyone? Buehler?

Oh, and just a quick non sequitor. Thank you all for the loverly Christmas cards and pressies. I did get them and really enjoy them. Yes, I do have cards for you. No, I haven't mailed them...but I've thought about it a lot. Does that count? ;-) They'll be on their way soon.
